Well-known French wine entrepreneur Bernard Magrez who already owns a string of properties in France and abroad has just added a Sauternes Premier Grand Cru Classé to his portfolio. Clos Haut Peyraguey with its 16 hectares under vine and output in the range of 28,000 bottles annually joins an already impressive stable. The acquisition brings the number of great classed growths up to four in each of the leading Bordeaux vineyards: Château Pape Clément, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, Château La Tour Carnet, Grand Cru Classé du Médoc en 1855 and Château Fombrauge, Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Emilion. He becomes the only person to own classified estates in each of these four prestigious appellation areas. Clos Haut Peyraguey is located at the highest part of the Bommes plateau, giving it a commanding view over the Sauternes wine region. Bernard Magrez’s latest purchase follows an unsuccessful earlier attempt to buy Château Romer. The attempt was thwarted by agricultural land agency Safer whose job is to give preference to young farmers - in this instance, François Janoueix who already owns a dozen or so estates in the Bordeaux region…
